As I get older and as my children get older I am becoming increasingly aware of the impact we are having on the environment. The waste we are using and in particular single-use plastic. For the last 2-3 years I have been on a mission to reduce the amount of single plastic items we use in our household and to be honest it’s not as easy as you might think it should be! About a year ago, I decided to try using a natural deodorant. Deodorants as a big piece of single-use plastic we all use regularly and it’s just so… well, wasteful.
On top of that my two oldest children – aged 11 and 9, now need to wear deodorant too. Not only is that a lot of disposable plastic, it also got me thinking about the chemicals that were in deodorants. I began to consider if I wasn’t keen on my children using some of the chemicals daily, why was I using them? But, I was super sceptical as to whether a natural deodorant would do the job.
Fussy Natural Deodorant – Who Are They and How Do They Work?
Recently I have been asked to review Fussy who make natural deodorants, and I was keen to give them ago. I have been using natural deodorant for about a year now, so I was interested to see how they compare.
First some really important stuff. Fussy is all-natural, vegan and cruelty-free. It contains no aluminium or parabens and is made up of natural ingredients, which I love. It’s backed by science and research, also awesome and uses a probiotic formula that lasts for 24 hours that likes to eat sweat!
It comes with a reusable case and you just slot the deodorant into it each time and then it’s finished the case it comes in is compostable. Which also means it’s plastic-free and of course much better for the environment.
How Does the Fussy Refillable Case Work?
You start by choosing your case which comes in a variety of colours. The case you keep and refill each time. Then you choose your refills – they come in a variety of smells such as tropic tonic and lime, mandarin, grapefruit and black pepper or unscented if scent is not your thing, plus many more.
To change the refill:
- Pinch the bottom and pull it out
- Take the lid off the compostable refill and place it onto the insert and push it back into the case
- Twist to raise the deodorant as needed
- To change the insert, twist the insert back down, remove and compost the old case and repeat
If the case gets mucky you can even put it in the dishwasher (when it’s empty), it’s so simple.
A starter pack of a case and one refill costs £13 (at the time of writing this review) and you can buy bundles of refills on the website which are posted straight to your door.
You can purchase the refills in bundles of 3 on the Fussy website for £18, or you can subscribe and save 15% off your purchases.
Fussy Deodorant Review
As I mentioned above, I have been using a natural deodorant for a while now, but if you haven’t used a natural deodorant be prepared for a transition period. Traditional antiperspirants use aluminium to stop you from sweating, whereas natural deodorants do not do that. It’s worth noting that natural deodorants are deodorants and not antiperspirants and this is a really important distinction, you will sweat using a natural deodorant you just won’t smell. This might feel strange at first, but I would argue it’s better for your body – we sweat for a reason…right? But it does take a good couple of weeks for your body to make the transition, so you just have to let your body adjust at first. The first time I switched it took a good As I have been using natural deodorant for a year now, I didn’t have this transition period, but it’s worth raising if you haven’t used one before.
Fussy deodorant was easy use to use and insert the refill and it smells great. I haven’t smelt once while using it and compared to another brand I use I think it makes me feel a bit less sweaty too. It left no white marks on my clothes, which is a big win and I’m at the stage now I just don’t think I will go back to traditional antiperspirants. I like that I am not using all these chemicals on my body, and more importantly my children’s bodies. I also really like the fact we’re using less disposable plastic in our everyday lives. I chose the lilac case, but there are loads of fun colours on the website, there is now a special edition hot pink which wasn’t available when I ordered mine which is rather lovely – you all know I love pink! As the title of this blog post says – Fussy is the natural deodorant that actually works.
