We all love books in this house. It’s a passion and a hobby that I am delighted to have passed on to my children. It’s actually hard to keep up with all of the books my children go through as they read so much. We used to go to the library quite a bit before the pandemic, but it’s not always practical now with the different clubs and activities after school they do. Reading Chest is a book rental system and the perfect solution to that problem. A great way to get your children new books to read regularly and then send them back when they are finished with them. They have books from the popular reading schemes in school and are also a really useful way to support their learning to read journey at home.
How Does Reading Chest Work?
You start with choosing your subscription package. There are different subscription models based on how many children you have, how many books you want to receive initially and how many swaps you want to make each month. Prices start at £9.95 per month.
For this review, we have the gold subscription, which meant we were sent 6 books initially – 3 for each child in our case. You can return 3 books at a time with unlimited swaps, which basically means unlimited books, great for my little bookworms! You can have 1, 2 or 3 book lists so you can create personalised book lists for 1, 2 or 3 children.
When you set up your account, you put in your child’s age, reading level and interests. You can also choose which reading schemes to receive books from, this was useful for us as my children have a Bug Club books app from school so I have selected to not receive Bug Club books so they do not get duplicates. We have surprise books for our delivery but you can also choose the books you would like to receive online.
Your books are posted out for you, along with a book tracker and stickers for your children to fill in every time they read a book. When you have completed your book tracker you can request a new one via your account section. They also received a bookmark and a book bag to keep their books in. This is really useful as I do worry with books like this that they might get lost in the mess of my children’s bedrooms, because of this we have created a rule that Reading Chest books need to be put and kept in their book bags, which they have so far stuck to.
When you have finished the books you can pop them in a pre-posted envelope and send them back ready for some new ones, our subscription lets you send back 3 books at a time. Then sit back and wait for the new books to arrive. This is a really clever scheme to help with costs if you have children that love to read in your house who wants you to buy new books all the time. For just one monthly cost and potentially as many books as they can read, depending on the subscription that you choose. It also helps your child get invested and excited about reading, they can choose books that inspire and excite them. Reading should always be fun and this is a great way to teach your child to read while making it just that.
