England’s capital is one of the best destinations in the world for a city break. Its majestic heritage buildings, exceptional museums, outstanding entertainment, and wealth of green spaces combine to create a fantastic holiday for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.

Hoping to visit London in 2024 but unsure of where to start? Here are five tips for planning a trip to London, from how to get around to what to pack.

  1. Understand the transport network

First and foremost, take time to understand the transport network.

Travelling by rail is the best way to get around: there are regular trains to London King’s Cross Station, and the extensive Underground network connects the city-centre hotspots and the outskirts. Driving is possible but the roads can be busy and subject to a congestion charge.

Walking is beneficial for getting your bearings and taking in London’s spectacular skyline, but be aware that the distances between each attraction can be significant.

  1. Book accommodation in advance

As a major business centre and the most popular European destination in 2023, London hotels fill up quickly months ahead of time. It’s therefore essential to book accommodation in advance as soon as you know your trip dates.

There is a huge variety when it comes to where to stay in London, from famous five-star names like The Ritz to budget-friendly options from independent providers and well-known chains.

  1. Research the activities on offer

The things to do in London are just as diverse as the accommodation. Research the activities on offer to make sure that you don’t miss out on the best heritage sites and other unique experiences.

Familiar favourites include Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. At each attraction, you’ll find child-friendly trails and exhibitions suitable for all ages. Bear in mind that there might be seasonal activities on offer too, especially if you’re visiting during October half-term week or the festive period.

For a taste of the great outdoors, look no further than Kew Royal Botanical Gardens and neighbouring Richmond Park.

  1. Create a comprehensive itinerary

However much you like to be spontaneous when you travel, it’s always best to create a comprehensive itinerary for a stint in London. A lot of time can be wasted if you spend each day siphoning through the sheer amount of options.

Plan your itinerary strategically, pairing activities based on their location and how well they complement each other. Don’t forget to research restaurants and cafés as well, and investigate options for evening entertainment. Catching a show on the West End is a must!

  1. Pack for all eventualities

Finally, it’s vital to pack for all eventualities when you’re preparing for your trip to London. The climate in England is changeable throughout the year, and can go from wet and windy to clear skies in the blink of an eye.

As well as clothes suitable for all weather, a pair of sturdy and comfortable shoes is essential to avoid discomfort and blisters when walking.
